NYC Trip Take 2

Well I headed to NYC once again in the hopes of securing a job out there doing something with motion graphics, visual effects, color grading, or editing. Needless to say it didn't happen. It's definitely hard in this economic climate for sure. On the upside I did take a number of pictures and will be adding to the photography section in the future. I also tried my hand at making a short time lapse while I was walking around. Not a traditional time lapse but I think it might look neat. Stay tuned for all of those! Waiting to hear back from a number of positions I have applied for so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my spirits high! Here's hoping third time's a charm!

NYC Trip

I recently went to NYC for six days. My main purpose for going was an interview I had lined up and to job hunt while in town. While unfruitful in relation to my main purpose for being there, I also wanted to first and foremost pay my respects at the World Trade Center Memorial. That day left it's mark on many lives and for me personally, prompted me into entering into the service.

Secondly, I wanted to go to the Occupy Wallstreet protest to show my support for the many issues that they are standing up for and that I share as well. I ended up taking a number of pictures while there to try and capture the atmosphere and vibe of the crowd. The night I got there many unions had came to show their support. People from all different backgrounds were there demonstrating what they believed in and wanted to change. This trip was amazing on many levels and pretty unforgettable. It helped me decide where I want to take my professional career. Amazing how people and places can have such a profound impact on you and the choices you make in life.

I have put up a new page on my website for all my photography work. The initial pictures posted are of my time at the Occupy Wallstreet protest. I have included the before and after color correction of each image. I will be putting up more pictures in the future, so as well as the other sections of my site, stay tuned for more of my work.

More Title Treatment Fun

I just completed my latest work. This was really fun to make and allowed me to build on my skillset and incorporate past ideas I had already from my preliminary work for Til Death's titles. I tried to keep an eerie foreboading vibe when I developed this from concept to fruition. A friend of mine, Christina Hitchcock, is completing her short film Soul and submitting to the Scary Cow Productions film festival in San Francisco. I was originally supposed to have more of a presence in the production but life got in the way, so I was so happy to at least be able to offer this contribution. She asked if I could create around a 10 sec title card for the film. Keep an eye out for this cinematographer and check out her website to see some more of her work!

Currently I'm working on multiple projects, but I figured I would share one that I'm working on that is turning out to be quite fun and interesting. Philip Chidel is a Sundance Award Winner for his past film Subject 2. His current film Til Death is currently in post production and he asked me to help come up with some ideas for title treatments for the opening and closing credits of the film. I've come up with a number of ideas but thought I would share examples from two of them. I'm not ultimately going with these but may incorporate elements from these into the final result.

A little color grading

So Vincent Laforet, one of the film makers that started the HDDSLR movement, is holding a contest on his blog. Check out his blog for more details. (http://bit.ly/k50wFO) I'm working on my submission right now and am working on figuring out the look I want for it. I'm using After Effects to do all my grading, utilizing Color Finesse and also trying Magic Bullet Looks out for the first time. I'm a big fan of Color Finesse having used it for many of my past projects. Magic Bullet seems to be great for quick and easy looks that have a good deal of customization, but for those that need more finite control may find it may not work for every situation. I'm personally looking forward to trying out DaVinci Resolve once the free limited version comes out. Having used Apple's Color, which while robust is in desperate need of an update, I'm hoping it is a smooth transition. I'm excited to really get my hands on professional color correction software. Below are my rough grades so far. Still finessing but I'm thinking that the 50s noir look I'm going for comes across.

I've just added a short clip from a scene I shot to the Graphic/Visual Effects page. The scene had four visual effects in total. As you will see from the clip I am demonstrating the final two which I was pretty happy with. The first two were not up to my standards, and hence the title of this post. Now that I have some free time and that better motion tracking software has become more accessible to me, I plan to reshoot and finesse this scene after completing post production on Crossed Lines. Stay tuned!

Today I debut my first website. My primary purpose for this website is to blog about my experiences in regards to the film making industry and to showcase my work.

This is a nerve racking but really exciting time in my life as I just graduated from the Academy of Art University this spring. It took some time but now I'm planning my move to Los Angeles to get my career started. Here's to making a dream of mine for some time finally happen!

In the meantime I'll be finishing up my first short film Crossed Lines. This was a great learning experience, as it was my first real venture into directing and really collaborating with actors. Though a work of fiction it is influenced by my deployment to Iraq and on a friend I made while over there.
